Honouring the People Behind the Charts: Reflections on Day of the Seafarer 2025

On June 25th we marked the Day of the Seafarer, a global occasion to recognise the vital contributions of those who make marine operations possible.
At INFOMAR, Ireland’s national seabed mapping programme, we are proud to work alongside a dedicated team of professionals who play a central role in our mission. From skippers and engineers to hydrographic surveyors, crew, and technical specialists, these individuals spend long periods at sea gathering the data that supports safe navigation, environmental protection, and sustainable marine development.
Their work often takes place in demanding offshore conditions and requires a combination of technical skill, adaptability, and strong teamwork. It is through their efforts that INFOMAR continues to deliver accurate and accessible seabed data for a wide range of users.
We offer our sincere thanks to all the women and men who contribute to this work, both at sea and onshore. Your commitment and collaboration are essential to the success of seabed mapping in Ireland.
To everyone working on the water, thank you for your service and dedication.
INFOMAR is a Government of Ireland seabed mapping programme funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and is jointly managed by Geological Survey Ireland and The Marine Institute. It aims to map Ireland’s seabed and deliver a comprehensive baseline bathymetry dataset to underpin the future management of Ireland’s marine resource.
